The softest down in the world

Mollissima – this is a Latin word and means “very soft”. It is therefore not surprising that the common eider, as the animal with the softest down in the world, has the word “mollissima” in its scientific species name (Somateria mollissima).

The down of the common eider is not so much for the animal’s own self-protection; the great sea-duck uses it first and foremost to protect its nest against the cold and wind. The common eider lives and breeds on the arctic coasts along the Atlantic and Pacific and is ideally adapted to Nordic living conditions with cold and wind.

Since eiders are wild animals and cannot be kept in stables, like other animal species, in order to obtain their feathers and down, the down has to be collected by hand by eiderdown farmers after the breeding season. Harvesting, cleaning, preparing and processing eiderdown requires a lot of experience in order to not damage the valuable raw material.

Eiderdown has two special features: first of all, it has no quills or other hard components, which makes it extremely light and soft. Secondly, it has tiny barbs that ensure that the pieces of down adhere to one another and form a kind of fleece. This means they cannot fly away in the wind.

Even though obtaining and processing eiderdown are extremely complex, its properties are so outstanding that it has been used by people for many centuries. Since the down feathers are only collected after the end of the breeding season, their collection for human use is entirely compatible with protection of the species, because the eider no longer needs the down at that point.

Sleep of the highest level of comfort

The symbol of the Mollissima bedding brand is the crown, and nothing could be more appropriate, because Mollissima eiderdown bedding is pure luxury. Mollissima is the queen of duvets, and the most exclusive down product in the world!

The bedding in the Mollissima line is filled with hand-picked Icelandic eiderdown. The cover is made from the finest Egyptian cotton batiste. Our Mollissima duvets are made in the studio with great attention to detail. The luxurious bedding is manufactured as baffle-box duvets, so the filling cannot slip. A stylish designer storage bag is included with every duvet.

We have a suitable duvet for every season of the year and every temperature preference: the Mollissima is available in six grades, from extra-light for the summertime to extra-warm for winter. The filling weight varies from 140 grams for small, light duvets to 1,620 grams for large, very warm duvets.

One of the unusual properties of eiderdown is that it self-regulates the temperature: at low temperatures, the pieces of down cling even closer together, thus ensuring a high level of insulation. As a natural product, the duvet still remains breathable. In addition, an eiderdown duvet can absorb a lot of moisture, which creates a good, dry sleeping environment, especially for those who sweat heavily in the night.
